CHARACTER PARTY PLANNING GUIDE

30, 45 or 60 Minutes: How Long Should a Character Visit Be?

Longer is not always better. The ideal character-visit length depends on the child’s age, number of guests, venue and what you want the performer to actually do.

Parents often assume that the longest character booking will automatically create the best party. In practice, the right visit length is the one that gives every child enough interaction without stretching the character beyond the group’s attention span. For a small birthday at home, a focused 30-minute appearance can feel substantial. For a larger hall party, 45 or 60 minutes may allow a more complete programme.

When each visit length works best

Use these examples as a planning guide rather than a rigid rule.

30-minute character visit

Often suitable for smaller groups, younger children, surprise home visits and parties where the character is one highlight among several activities.

45-minute character visit

A useful middle ground when you want more interaction, dancing, games or individual photographs without making the character responsible for the whole party.

60-minute character visit

Better suited to larger groups or bookings where you want a more structured entertainment block with time for activities, photos and a proper farewell.

Guest numbers change everything

Six children

A shorter booking can still allow every child meaningful interaction because there is less waiting and fewer photographs to organise.

Twenty-five children

More time may be needed simply to keep the experience fair. Group management and transitions take longer even when the activity list is similar.

Choose by outcome, not minutes

Ask what you want children to remember afterwards.

The big surprise

If the entrance and photos are the main goal, a shorter visit may be enough.

Games and dancing

Allow more time if the character will lead structured activities.

Story-led interaction

Princess and Christmas experiences often benefit from calmer conversation and personalised moments.

Lots of photographs

Large groups need more time for individual and family pictures.

Two characters

More performers can increase the energy but also create more photo combinations and interaction.

A full party programme

If the entertainer is expected to fill most of the celebration, choose a package designed for that purpose rather than simply extending a basic meet-and-greet.

Frequently asked questions

Is 30 minutes too short for a character visit?

Not necessarily. For a smaller group and a focused plan, 30 minutes can feel exciting and complete.

Is 60 minutes too long for toddlers?

It can be if the programme is not varied. Younger children often respond better to shorter, changing activities and a clear finish.

Should I book longer if I have more children?

Usually, yes. More children means more greetings, photographs and transitions, especially if you want individual attention.
